07 SEE THROUGH YOU (4:33)
One of the four older songs on Timescape, See Through You in its original form first appeared on the setlist of an earlier incarnation of The Portraits in the late 1990s. Reworked and reworded, the new ethnic-tinged version mixes sampled electro-loops with bongos, eerie piano lines with worldy voices, and deals in the lyrics with domestic violence and the "business as usual" camouflage that surrounds families affected. Featuring ethnic flutery by Simon "Fuzzy" Ratcliffe.

Lyrics

I’ve dreamt a hundred plans of action
Sneaking through the door
I’ve planned for years and all in vain
I’ve battled through
As your reaction’s
Too fearful to ignore
I’m sure it’s really me to blame

I can’t move without asking
I can’t breathe without crawling
I can’t cry without trembling
But I can see through you

I closed the door, accepted distance
Sent camouflaged goodbyes
What part of me is left to break?
Caution
Now that I’ve even lost resistance
To my own demise
I count how many blows it takes

I can’t move without asking
I can’t breathe without crawling
I can’t cry without trembling
But I can see through you

Some years ago you read a feature
On a life burned out too young
You gasped and then you turned the page
Caution
But you recall that sorry creature
Whose help had never come
As you raise your own hand in rage

I can’t move without asking
I can’t breathe without crawling
I can’t cry without trembling
But I can see through you
