MUSIC FOR BURMA

LA MUSIQUE POUR LA BIRMANIE

Weʼre using our music to raise funds to help fund the continuation of a school providing free education to more than 6000 children in the city of Mandalay, Burma/Myanmar.

We're supporting an inspirational school for disadvantaged children called 'Phaung Daw Oo School' in the Northern Burmese town of Mandalay. Thanks to the generosity of supporters of The Portraits, in 2016 we raised around £5,000 Sterling for the school.

PDO has saved thousands of children orphaned by war, ethnic cleansing and natural disasters, housing and feeding them against the backdrop of what was until recently a brutal military dictatorship, teaching them the art of free thought under almost unimaginably difficult circumstances. The school is funded entirely by donations and is one of the worthiest causes we've ever been involved with. Visit the school's Website and Facebook Page.

PDO school not only provides education but a shelter for hundreds of children who have been orphaned, abused, neglected, abandoned and poverty stricken, including different ethnicities from all around Myanmar. Below is an image of the students' sleeping quarters, demonstrating the limited space the school can afford them for all their worldly possessions... contained in a couple of bags!

These are some of the children who were orphaned by the Burmese Tsunami and Cyclone in 2008 and who now live in the school. Cyclone Nargis swept into the low-lying Irrawaddy River Delta in central Myanmar. The result was the worst disaster ever in the impoverished country. According to official figures, 84,500 people were killed and 53,800 went missing. ... The UN estimates that as many as 2.4 million people were affected.

Phaung Daw Oo Monastic Education High School was founded in 1993, established with the purpose of providing free education to poor children. Currently, the school educates, houses and feeds over 10,000 students and several hundred teachers. The students include orphans, abused, neglected, abandoned and poverty stricken children of different ethnicities from all around Myanmar, and their already difficult existence has become immeasurably worse since the military coup of February 2021.

Thank you so much on behalf of The Portraits and the school to everyone who has so far donated and shared the cause we are supporting.
